The camels arrived decades earlier, imported from India and Afghanistan in the 1860s to haul supplies across Australia's arid interior before roads and rail reached the Kimberley region. When motor transport rendered them obsolete, many were released into the wild or repurposed for tourism. Today Cable Beach remains Broome's geographic and cultural anchor, a landscape where the Yawuru people have lived for more than 60,000 years. The tidal range here exceeds nine metres during spring tides, exposing vast mudflats that attract migratory shorebirds from Siberia and Alaska each austral summer. The beach faces due west, making it one of Australia's premier sunset viewing corridors. Between April and October, the dry season delivers cloudless skies and temperatures that hover between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius, ideal conditions for the nightly procession of camel trains that depart two hours before dusk. The camel rides themselves follow a route pioneered by local operators in the 1980s, when Broome began its transformation from pearling town to tourism destination. A typical trek covers three to four kilometres of shoreline, timed so riders reach the turnaround point as the sun nears the horizon. The camels walk at a steady four kilometres per hour, swaying in a gait that distributes weight across broad, padded feet designed for sand. Guides position the trains to frame the sunset between the riders and the ocean, a composition that has become synonymous with Broome's tourism identity.
